Interesting comment to make here is in the English translation the prayer is said to say "but deliver us from evil", where in Church slavonic Orthodox Church text the text is literally translated reading "deliver us from the evil one", stressing that evil is not an abstract force as most of modern people think but it is personalized and there is the evil one which is has a personality and is not some abstract force like taught and belived by multitudes of people including Christians today.

Disable server side includes (SSI) in Apache on Debian GNU / Linux to Improve minor Apache performance

Disalable Apache Server-side includes on debian Linux disable SSI for better performance and security
By default Apache deb installable binary on Debian GNU / Linux is shipped with Apache version  (Apache 2.2.16-6+squeeze6) is configured to be able to process Server Side Include (SSIs) scripts.

For those who don't know what is a Server-Side Includes it a way giving  possibility for inclusion through .shtml or even .html files (if configured) to dynamically include and process external scripts. Most admins should have already seen SSI scripts, but it is possible they don't even know it is SSI. An example code from an SSI script looks something like:

As of time of writting (on Debian stable codename Squeeze – and I guess the unstable one too).

In Debian.BG one of my previous employment companies SSI was used on a few website Projects;  However nowadays SSI's are not so popular as they used to be and many websites using mostly PHP for a programming backend don't use / need the Server Side Includes at all. Thus it is recommended on such servers where SSIs aren't used and not planned by company to be used in short future to disable SSI  (.shtml) support completely. As the popular saying says "less is more" – having enabled SSI hanging their is simply a waste of Apache resources and just another hanging unused feature from security stand point is not good.

 SSI .shtml support in Debian is enabled via /etc/apache2/mods-available/mime.conf, not  through apache2.conf because of the modular Apache Debian build structure.

Thus to disable server-side parsing on Debian (and I guess other debian derivatives);

  • Edit /etc/apache2/mods-available/mime.conf

vim /etc/apache2/mods-available/mime.conf

  • Look for file section:

Don't expect that disabling SSI will give a great boost to the webserver but it will definitely, do a minor performance improvement. This should be noticable on  Webserver hosts (using apache2-mpm-prefork) with thousands of Apache forks, on a little home Webserver perf change is unnoticeable.

Some people might argue me but recently and over the last years, I had thoughts over the  so common nowadays problem of constipation. I think constipation  is God judgement on our increasingly gluttony self-love instead love for others, ungodliness  and our multiple sins.

I'm deriving this conclusion from my personal experience with constipation, every-time I over ate forced by my gluttony (partially forced by the over filling from everywhere with marketing to eat),  I get constipated. Constipation is one of the worst experience one can get and probably there is no person on earth who didn't experienced this in a stage of his earthly life. Probably half of the world is suffering from this terrible problem at least few times a year, where the frequency of constipation around people tends to be increasing with every consequential year.
Most of people from western world countries are in a number of times suffering more compared to less developed countries.

Main reason for increased constipation percentage in the western world (in my view) is the bad quality of half-artificually produced vegetables and fruits. Many of which grows as you should know grows in laboratories like places in order to do a cost saving for the companies. Due to the marketing hype and fuzz that took over westerners, many as a trick use the "green product" labeling just to make you convince their product, where in reality the product is far from green.

I think, God allowed the poisons which we hold in our hearts to materialize in our food as a punishment for our lack of repentance.

The hyper consumption that is ruling over western europe model is trying to spread itself in the less developed countries as well, while maybe a  billion of peoples all around the world are on the edge to die from hunger. In the west all businesses are trying to restructure themselves to more green friendly / (more green), whether parallel with that the same 'environment concerned businesses' are stimulating people to over consume through their marketing departments. Tell me isn't that one huge hypocrisy? How comes on one place a company talks about any efficiency if its fruits are inefficiency (over consumption)?

In the past days people consumed much less than today and less varied foods, still most of them were more heatlthy and many of them lived to an older age compared to know (this is a fact that one can learn not from the fake company statistics on the internet  trying to all the time show that the age barrier is increasing, this can be learned from our grandmothers and grandfathers and a bit of staring into history).

"Seed Companies" like Monsanto are already dominating the markets and killing the little farmers, so every next day, less and less of original God blessed plant seeds is left on earth. And even those who still are trying to be individual middle and little farmers are forced to buy already a genetically or hybrid modified seeds so a lot of the grown vegetables or fruits  is not grown through God blessed and given original food fondamential but some kind of 'human laboratory altered' plants. Most people and companies doesn't care if the seed is blessed or not by God or what kind of seed or food it is due to the fact they have long ago rejected God and do operate all their life with no God in their mind, but with the only goal for more and more pleasure and self-fulfillment of interests. It is sad really our bodies are constipated but it all starts from our soul constipation, we don't develop our souls in God's knowledge of good but advance instead in the "constipation" of  evil.

But constipation is not so bad in reality and it can be seen as a blessing from God as all pain makes us re-think over life and our deeds. Thus I believe though many might argue me, Constipation is just another of God's innumerous mercies over man to turn us to repentance and prayer.

But I think still there hope as long as each of us tries to be good or develop for good and pray to God, I believe all can be changed our soul and body constipation can be removed through God's power and mercy – only we have to strive for it ….

 

Saint Anthony’s Cave and the Coptic Orthodox Church / Extreme Pilgrim – Ascetic Christianity movie

I held interest in Coptic Orthodox Church. As I had meet a Coptic Orthodox Christian and his faith has significantly impressed me. Before some time I've found on youtube a video talking about one Australian person who from Atheist become Coptic Christian and later choose a living as Desert Monk Father in  one of the most ancient Christian monasteries monastery  Saint Anthony The Great. Father's Lazarus until this very day lives in Saint Anthony's Monastery. You can see an interesting documentary about fr. Lazarus "different life"  in the Last Anchorite a Movie about Coptic Oriental Orthodox hermit life.

Every Orthodox Christian as well as any Christianity historian should know very well the name of st. Anthony the Great. St. Anthony is probably the father of Monastic life and the monastic tradition started by his followers is living in various Christian monasteries (predominary Eastern Orthodox and Coptic Orthodox) all around the world. The monastery was established in year 356 by direct followers of the Great saint. Saint Anthony himself was illiterate but same time achieved holiness and God knowledge which only few in whole human history did. Recently my personal thoughts on Human Progress, ProgRes = (Programmed Resources), were leading in the same path testifying myself that the the path of "Higher Education" and big knowledge we all took, though leading us to big inventions and "fleshly developments" is more and more depriving us of the path of Truth and Love for God, which in its essence is a life of simplicity and humility.
 Saint Anthony's desert Monastery is one of the oldest Christian monasteries  in  history of mankind. It is  one of the innumerous God miracles that the monastery built by saint Anthony's pupils is existing until today for already ABOUT 17 centuries (1700 YEARS!!!!)! It is located deep in the Red Sea Mountains (334 km from egypt Capital Cairo) very near to the Saint Catherine's Eastern Orthodox Monastery.

Saint Anthony the Great, is among the most venerated Christian saints also for  the reason he fearlessly defended true Christianity from the heresy of Arius during  first Ecumenical Council in Nicea A.D. 325. Arianism used to be one of the most deadly spiritual  heresies since the Birth of Christ's Church. Arians rejected the Godly nature of Christ. Many protestant Christian sects nowadays are matching teachings taught by Arians. 

Below movie BBC Extreme Pilgrim – Ascetic Christianity was produced by a Protestant (Anglican) Priest Father Peter Owes. From an Eastern Orthodox Christian perspective it is interesting  to see his easy digestive "pinky" view on Christian faith and general life as it is typical for most western people.

Saint Athonoy's Cave and Saint Anthony Monastery – Extreme Pilgrim – Ascetic Christianity

During watching the movie some of his sayings are quite inappropriate and very much displaying the protestant bloated view of Christianity that is ruling over England, however near the end of the movie one can see Peter's change for good (the monastery and monks prayers changed him); he talks more spiritually wise and he started changing his understanding of Christianity and life. As the Extreme Pilgrim Ascetic is a few parts documentary the other 2 parts are exploring the Wondering Mystics of the Himalayas Mountains and a Confu-Monks of Central China (Buddhism) etc.

As most of the people in the Western World, though Peter being a devoted Christian and priest in the Church of England (Anglican Church), "pater" Owes does not have obviously clear understanding on True Christian belief system. In his complete sequelmovie he is putting on the same plane Buddhism, Mysticism and Christianity lowering truthfulness of our Christian faith to the other religions! This is no strange as this tendency is quite evident in Western European Countries (mixed Roman Catholic / Protestant countries). The previous Roman Catholic Pope himself John Paul II was for unification of all world religions not in the name of Jesus Christ but in the name of  a fake (anti-Christian) World Peace.

It is great Father Peter made this video so we Christians can have a look on how a hermit christian life is like. Though the movie is so nice the general message it spreads sadly is  very much in the spirit of World Religions Ecumenism that is so popular in these days, so Christians has to be careful with that.

Hopefully after he experienced some authentic hermitage Christianity, Peter Owes spiritual eyes will re-open for the true Christian Church and faith tradition kept  in , the One Holy Apostolic Church – the Orthodox Church. I should also mention, that though Coptic Spirituality is on such a high level, Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria is sadly officially not  in eucharist communion with  Easter Orthodox Church due to their rejection of the Ecumenical Councils after the III-rd Ecumenical Church Council (gathering). Along with preserving a very ancient Church tradition practices in the Coptic Church, from what I've saw in further researching about Coptic Orthodox Church has a bit of inclanation in iconography towards Roman Catholicism iconography. Of course some of this Roman Catholic iconography  fragments are also evident in some of 19th century iconography in Russia, but in general in rest of Eastern Orthodox world this is much less than what I see in Coptic Church.

Most of the belief system and feast days of Coptic Orthodox Christians is almost identical to the rest of the Eastern Orthodox Church, making our Churches core teaching identical, however we're not officially one Church in holy communion unionl.

From what I've saw also it is evident that Coptic Church adopted a lot of arts along with the Greek language for their liturgy, as they sing the Kyrie Eleison prayer in Greek = (Lord Have Mercy). Also something to be noted is some of early Christian traditions in Copts were unchanged, they make the sign of the cross (from left to right) – little similar to Roman Catholics, whether we the Eastern Orthodox Christians, make the sign of the cross from right to left – you might want to see at my previous article why Orthodox Christians make the sign of the Cross different from Roman Catholics.

In any means, I'm mostly thankful to God will blessing me to have a look at the Cave of Saint Anthony  – where he spend most of his life and the Great monastic life they still thankfully lead in this spiritual cloister  ! I also hope my little post will be of help of people searching for Authentic Christianity and interested to strengthen their faith.

Do you work with Linux and need communicate via e-mail with people sending you Microsoft Doc files created with Microsoft Office Word?

Do you end up with crappy (not identicaly looking) .doc files, after editing with Open Office and mailing back to Windows users, using Microsoft Office (Word)?

I experienced this many time and though it is not completely Open Office fault it is hard to explain or convince others to simply switch to Libre Office and distribute text in .ODT. Also pitily,  most computer users are much below the avarege level and too used to MS Office, so it is hardly possible  to change their bad habits (I try that with my co-students in Anrhem Business School) and I tell you from experience it is not possible …

I use GNU / Linux  as main Desktop operating system for  10 years now and for my work and studying, it is common the colleagues send me files in MS Word .DOC format. Usually I use OpenOffice to read and edit them and send back. However, not all formatted .doc files looks later nice in MS Word 2003 / 2007. Thus I have also a Native Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my Debian Linux running through – WINE Windows emulator.

Often, when I want to be sure a received MS .DOC file should be displaying exactly the same on MS Windows OS – to (avoid collegues criticism). I open the document using wine emulated Microsoft Office 2003.

Most of the MS .doc files are received over e-mail (I use as pop3 client Icedove- Mozilla Thunderbird), so I save them further on my hard disk and need to read / modifythem.
It is rather inconvenient and time inefficient to start Microsoft Office from gnome-terminal and type in below long command in order to edit .docs:

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files"/"Microsoft Office"/OFFICE11/WINWORD.EXE

Thus I wanted a more convenient, easy way to be able to directly open .doc files with emulated Microsoft Word from GUI on my Debian Linux notebook.
This is possible using a nautilus plugin tool called nautilus-scripts-manager. Earlier I blogged about how to make extracting PDF to images possible with nautilus-scripts-manager, in the exactly same manner of logic is possible to add as many processing scripts to be available for invokement via the Scriptsnautilus scripts Properties menu.

Here is how to add MS Word to nautilus GNOME menus:

1. Install nautilus-scripts-manager (if not already installed)

debian:~# apt-get install --yes nautilus-scripts-manager

2. Create ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/ directory

(~/ is shortcut for /home/yourusername/) – To add it globally for all users, one has to create the same .gnome2/nautilus-scripts/ directory with respective scripts for all existing users on host.

mkdir ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/

3. Create ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/word.sh MS Word launcher script

  Edit ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/word.sh and add  like following 2 liners script: (note the paths to WINWORD.EXE might vary depending on exact Microsoft Office installed version:

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files"/"Microsoft Office"/OFFICE11/WINWORD.EXE "$1"

Further on once placed, make word.sh script executable:

Onwards it is possible to open .doc files from Nautilus Scripts Manager menu press on the .doc file with last mouse button and choose Scripts :

Right now I don't have at hand FreeBSD, and I'm not sure if nautilus-scripts-manager is available with FreeBSD gnome so, if someone has tested this and can confirm this works on FreeBSD drop a comment please.

If you get thousand of messages:

[Wed Nov 21 16:28:49 2012] [error] [client 89.136.100.192] client sent HTTP/1.1 request without hostname (see RFC2616 section 14.23): /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:)

 

in /var/log/apache2/error.log It is due to a script kiddie port scanner, usually such requests originate from Turkia, Romania ,Russia.. Usually, for servers getting in Apache error.log  GET /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:) once in a while, it is not an issue however if you get too many of this messages it is sometimes useful to filter them with a simple iptables rule

debian:~# /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -m string --string "GET /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS." --algo bm --to 70 -j DROP

What above command does is it greps the 1st 70 bytes and checks, whether it contains string '/w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:)' , whether string is matched it jumps to DROP rule filtering the IP. Of course on busy servers checking each incoming IP client TCP/IP request for a certain string might not be very efficient and even can be a possible bottleneck. So I don't know whether filtering /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:) is good or bad practice. Anyways generally it is wise to filter IPs doing the request anyways since, they could try a various script kiddie cracking tools, port scanners and even some of them might be hosts attempting DoS or DDoS.

Also it is useful to store for later the rule with:

debian:~# /sbin/iptables-save > /root/iptables_rules.txt

Then you can load up /root/iptables_rules.txt with:

debian:~# /sbin/iptables-restore < /root/iptables_rules.txt

Some common way to keep the iptables rule loaded on system boot is by adding /iptables-restore  to /etc/rc.local
 

Some alternative methods to filter IPs issuing GET  /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:) to Apache is through  fail2ban, denyhosts or blockhosts or Apache mod security filters.

To keep an eye on all DROPped and REJECT-ed traffic (in bytes) it is useful to use:

How to activate (enable) telnet client on Windows XP and Windows 7

1. Enable / Disable Telnet Client command on Windows XP

By default telnet is enabled on Windows XP. However on some messed up Windows installations, cause of viruses or some custom users changes the PATH variable set for command prompt to C:\WINDOWS\system32\
is missing and therefore typing in telnet in cmd.exe fails to find the command. Thus it is good idea before trying to enable telnet with dism command to try running in Command Prompt

C:\WINDOWS\system32\telnet.exe,

 If the command is not found  by giving it full path, then you can read down the article how to enable it.
Launch command prompt cmd.exe and type:

dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:TelnetClient

Disables telnet, whether it is enabled on system, on some systems XP admins might want to do this for increasing system security 

2. Enabling Telnet client using XP Graphical interface

Start (button) -> Control Panel -> Add / Remove Programs-> (Click on Turn Windows features on and Off )

3. Turn on Windows Telnet Client on Win 7  using Graphical Environment

Probably out of security, concerns within Microsoft took a wise decision to make Telnet Client disabled by default on Windows 7. Thus just trying to run it via cmd.exe users one gets 'telnet is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file'

Start (button) -> Control Panel -> Program and Features -> (Click on Turn Windows features on and Off )

You will get a dialog listing a number of things you can turn on you need to set tick on

 Then a pop-up User Account Control will require you to enter administrator user password (if not already logged in as administrator).

Further on launch cmd.exe and type telnet

Start (menu) -> Start Search -> cmd.exe
or pressing Windows Button + R and type in cmd.exe and type telnet

4. Turn on ( Install ) Win 7 Telnet Client from command line:

Launch command prompt (cmd.exe) and type in:

C:\Windows> pkgmgr /iu:"TelnetClient"

Installing using pkgmgr /ui: "TelnetClient" should be able to install telnet also on Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2 Servers and Windows Vista

Lastpass – store and manage website passwords plugin for Firefox

Lastpass is a handy plugin allowing you to save and manage website passwords. As with other password manager programs, it is necessery to set one Master password which allows you to view all other website login passwords. Of course for people very concerned of security LastPass might not be the best choice, as it can reveal a possible malicious person all passwords by stealing just one. Besides that lastpass plugin sends and stores password on lastpass.com, so anyone who might hack into their server will get your account details and password. Anyways, still for the casual web user which is very lazy and less security concerned it nice.

As I see on the Lastpass's website it even was mentioned in Forbes  Business Magazine 🙂

The quickest way to install it in Firefox is to follow menus:

Tools -> Add ons -> Search (type lastpass) and click Install

After the usual browser install the plugin loads up, it is necessery to create account with lastpass.com and tick the Agreement to send encrypted password data to LastPass.

Once it is configured interesting feature of LastPass is automatic filling up of Forms.
You know how much often it is nowdays to create new registration with websites. If you have to create new registrations too frequently and fill up the same data again and again you start to get very irritated. Here LastPass will be mostly helpful as it can fill up around web-forms automatically with a predefined Form data (Fork Skele).

After filling up all data, you will be redirected and automatically logged into LastPass's website Vault. This is a webplace, giving you access to see and manage all password via lastpass.com. You can put different identities inside have numerous pre-filled forms to be used as a samples for automatic form filling, add notes, create groups etcetera.

The plugin's idea is good and useful and as I said most people might have no objections using it still I don't like  fact that a 3rd party site (Lastpass.com) stores my data is very so though it was fun to test it I doubt to seriously use it in future.
