I also dislike the Debian ugly look, and I don’t think this is of less importance, because a pleasant interface can for sure make your daily computer use more comfortable. It is a shame that Debian installed gdm3 as my default login screen, and your method won’t work for it.

It should work it works for me, though my Debian is updated and there might be some configuration differences in a clean install that makes it a problem.
