NX Nomachine a VNC substitute server / client program which is outstandingly fast on slow network connections

Monday, 17th January 2011

NX Nomachine was recommended by Dave just a month ago, but I forgot to mention about it here on my blog.
NX Nomachine in reality is doing the same thing as a normal VNC server or even a normal XServer / xinit remote connection that enables you to use your remote desktop on either Linux, Windows or Solaris.

The program is not free software and costs money, however for a personal use it’s freely available and can be directly grabbed and installed.

I’ve tested the NX Nomachine and I should say the respondance it demonstrates is really amazingly quick
Even on my slow low band internet it flies and the connection to the remote NX Nomachine Server behaves exactly as it’s running directly on your current host from which you issue the NX no machine client.

Nevertheless the free version of the nx nomachine is really annoying since, with the free version release you can’t use applications which require a superuser privileges. However for console administration sudo is working so at least this is something.

I have installed the NX Nomachine client on Debian thus I’ll describe how to install and start using the NX client on this Linux platform.

To install the nx nomachine client on my Debian Linux, I followed these steps:

1. Download the deb package (Suitable for both Debian and Ubuntu)
The download link for Linux at this time is:
Download NX Nomachine Linux or use the nomachine debian download link
I used wget to download as I’m quite used to it;
debian:~# wget http://64.34.161.181/download/3.4.0/Linux/nxclient_3.4.0-7_i386.deb

2. Next and last step before you’re ready to launch nx nomachine is install the client program:

debian:~# dpkg -i nxclient_3.4.0-7_i386.deb

This will have installed the nxclient; To further start the nxclient from your terminal issue:

debian:~# /usr/NX/bin/nxclient

Now if you have a remote nx nomachine server server you can enjoy the quickness of this program, it will be most probably like working on your workstation locally 🙂

    Hi there,

I’m pleased to read your positive comment on NX performance. From your blog post I understand that you are perhaps looking to run an NX session as root. If so, we implemented this feature in an earlier version (check the Feature Request link here:http://www.nomachine.com/fr/view.php?id=FR12E01969).
By default the possibility to run as root is disabled, but you can change the settings in the server configuration file.

Let me know if this helps or if I perhaps misread what you wrote. We are always happy to receive feedback: user satisfaction is a top priority with us.

    Thanks,

    Hi there,

I was pleased to read your comments about NX performance.

You mention superuser priveleges. If you mean the ability to run an NX session as root user, this was implemented in an earlier version (check out the Feature Request ) and by default it is disabled. You can change this setting by editing the appropriate key in the server configuration file. Let us know if this helps: user feedback is always welcome.

    Hi admin,

I stumbled across an old blog from you regarding gyroscopic managment.
I am also a student at the han and would like the file for my research project. Would be awesome if you can send me a mail.

    best regards,

    Hi,

Had been recently advised by a colleague to use nxclient and I am very impressed with is fast performance. But, there are some snags which repeatedly annoy the users.

    1) After some time of use, the windows opened in my session freeze (ie no resizing, movement of windows is possbile at all.) which means keep working on the windows as they are which is very painful.

    2) Even if cap-lock is not pressed (and windows verifies that), nxclient window starts thinking that cap-lock is on so I have to keep toggling the caps lock to work in nxclient and windows simultaneously.

I have talked to many colleagues using nxclient and they all faced similar issues. Anyone having any suggestion is most welcome.

I have had the same problem with CAPS suddenly sticking on for some time now. Sometimes I find that quickly clicking SHIFT clears it, however it has just happened to me again and the SHIFT trick is not working this time. I will post a work around/fix if I find one as it is most annoying and makes NX unusable for most admin tasks when it happens.

After searching for a solution to the caps-lock-reversed problem for years, I FINALLY stumbled across something that worked:
    -ctrl-alt-delete
    -Cancel or Escape

Fixed!  Hope it works for you, too.
