How to find how much power (electricity) consumption a server or PC has?

Kill-A-Watt track system power electricty consumption on GNU / Linux servers and FreeBSD
A friend of mine today ask me if I have clue if it is possible to track his home computer Consumption with some piece of Software?

The question is quite interesting, since I run a home server with Linux and it would have been nice if I can exactly track how much electricity per month it  consumes

Now knowing, the answer I first checked online for some kind of software and all I can find something that does something similar but all can find is powertop.

Though powertop is nice Linux tool to keep an eye which program on PC consumes most from overall consumed electricity and order the programs and modules based on electricity consumption it is not providing information on overall electricity consumption.

The answer makes it clear right of time of writing this post there is no software for Linux or BSD that keeps track electricity consumption daily or monthly

I've googled to see what is Kill-A-Watt hardware? and found fuzzy named device Kill-A-Watt for sale on ThinkGeek's website for the not so expensive 24.99$

To use Kill-A-Watt device is to be connected inside the power plug and then PC or Server has to be plugged into  Kill-A-Watt dev. I've red also (while researching) many Intelligent UPS devs has support for keeping log of discharged energy, so just buying a good UPS with web administrator or even a cheap one providing statistical information of UPS use via serial port should be another alternative to track ur server consumption.

I'm owning ZTE Blade 3 chineese brand mobile phone. I thought there is not a big deal to buy chineese mobile phone as it saves money but the good old saying: "The Cheap always is more expensive" came true to proof the old wisdom.

The phone runs some Android port of version 4.0.4 and generally it runs well for a couple of days, but after the increase of application the battery started discharging too quickly, I have to charge almost daily … also occasionally since I have turned synchronization of mobile phone numbers with Google  from settings the ZTE Andorid phone started to randomly loose its contacts (after which I had to restore with proprietary application Dr. Fone). After a while I realized there is another fix, sometimes Contacts restore was also possible through using free application Contacts Sync Fix, but most of the times the only thing that could resolve the contacts is to dig for lost phonebook contacts with Dr. Fone …. Eventually I realized the Lost PhoneBook Contacts issue can be resolved by itself on a random principle so the missing phones issue sometimes solved by itself just by switching off complete the phone for some time and switching it on again after 12 hours?! Recently I found another alternative way to restore sudden (deleted) disappered phone numbers by:

Settings -> Profiles and Synchronization -> (Go to configured gmail account settings) -> Settings of Profile

Then

(Frequency of syncrhonization, messaging etc.) -> (click over the email address) -> Frequency of email check (every 4 hours) 

Set the every 4 hours settings to Never and then after a minute or 2 (interval), set back the Never (opt) to every 4 hours

Since some time I started facing another more severe problem – random phone reboots after which the battery often kept at a critically low charged. The batter often fall to 40% or 50% charge from 99% / 100% charge, and after some time of talking over the phone the battery fall down to as low as 18% and in a short random time it fall to 9%, then after a reboot it uppered the charge to 35% or 45% and the oddities continued. My first guess was it could be the battery being broken, some colleagues at work advised me to completely discharge the battery so the phone couldn't boot and then try to charge it with Battery Doctor free Android Application. Battery Doctor has a special 3 stage charging:

1. Bulk Charge

The primary purpose of a battery charger is to recharge a battery. This first stage is typically where the highest voltage and amperage the charger is rated for will actually be used. The level of charge that can be applied without overheating the battery is known as the battery's natural absorption rate. For a typical 12 volt AGM battery, the charging voltage going into a battery will reach 14.6-14.8 volts.

Where first 80% of the battery are charged with a rapid electricity influx to battery once 80% of battery charge is reached charging is moved to the so Absorption Battery Charge

2. Absorption Charge

Smart chargers will detect voltage and resistance from the battery prior to charging. After reading the battery the charger determines which stage to properly charge at. Once the battery has reached 80%* state of charge, the charger will enter the absorption stage. At this point most chargers will maintain a steady voltage, while the amperage declines. The lower current going into the battery safely brings up the charge on the battery without overheating it. This charge phase takes much longer time to charge.
Then comes the final charging state Float Charge

3. Float Charge

Some chargers enter float mode as early as 85% state of charge but others begin closer to 95%. Either way, the float stage brings the battery all the way through and maintains the 100% state of charge. The voltage will taper down and maintain at a steady 13.2-13.4 volts, which is the maximum voltage a 12 volt battery can hold. This charging is also known as "trickle charging". Float Charging battery electricity influx is so small that you can leave the phone to charge in this mode for days (if you like).

But guess what, after I tried to completely discharge the battery, it discharged to a state where it auto rebooted just before Android boots and reboots again and again, after nothing happened for about 2 hours of leaving the phone to automatically rebooted I decided to try the Battery Doctor 3 stage charging without having my battery completely dried out. The 3 Stage Charging is also known as Android Battery Calibration process and as I heard it helped fix many people's battery which for some reason got their Android battery in a broken state without physically substituting it.

Unfortunately In my case using Battery Doctor didn't help … so after spending time to read on some forum threads finally found this one. There many Bulgarians complained for buying ZTE Blade III and Huawei variations from the 3 major stream bulgarian mobile phone operatorsM-Tel, Vivacom and Globul and shortly after experiencing the strange random chineese smart phone reboots.  Some suggested that the Android Kernel is causing the issues or the firmware and suggested Phone Software Reset, however as I red most people that tried to solve it that way reported this doesn't solve it. Many People said to have shipped the phone as it was in a warranty back to services and phones were given back often with flushed firmware and in a little while the problem re-occured, some reported of another strange fix – a tiny sticky thing which kept the battery more stable?!! 🙂

Yes I know it looks kinda of insane … as this little holder could be any piece of paper and many reported to have fix the random battery charge drop down by sticking a tiny piece of paper between the battery and mobile shell I try it myself and GUESS WHAT?? IT WORKED !!! :)))

This is pretty much the Bulgarian and Russian primitive way to fix things but it works 🙂 I was exceedingly happy as I already have spend plenty of money for this mobile and I really was unwilling to buy another phone and it was out of warranty. I guess the whole issues started after I have occasionally dropped my phone on a couple of times on the ground and some little piece of plastic holding the battery eroded or whatever … Anyways the PAPER WAY WORKS! Cheers and hope this saves someone else out there from having to spend on new mobile!

Script to Automatically change current MySQL server in wp-config.php to another MySQL host to minimize WordPress and Joomla downtimes

I'm running a two servers for a couple of home hosted websites. One of the servers is serving as Apache host1 and has configured MySQL running on it and the second is used just for database host2 – (has another MySQL configured on it).
The MySQL servers are not configured to run as a MySQL MASTER and MySQL SLAVE (no mysql replication), however periodically (daily), I have a tiny shell script that is actualizing the data from the active SQL host2 server to host1.

Sometimes due to electricity problems or CPU overheats the active MySQL host at host2 gets stoned and stops working causing the 2 WordPress based websites and One joomla site inaccessible.
Until I manually get to the machine and restart host2 the 3 sites are down from the net and as you can imagine this has a very negative impact on the existing website indexing (PageRank) in Google.

When I'm at home, this is not a problem as I have physical access to the servers and if somethings gets messy I fix it quickly. The problem comes, whether I'm travelling or in another city far from home and there is no-one at home to give the hanged host hard reboot ….

Lately the problems with hang-ups of host2 happaned 3 times or so for 2 weeks, as a result the websites were inaccessible for hours and since there is nobody to reboot the server for hours; the websites keep hanging until the DB host is restarted ;;;;

To work-around this I came with the idea to write a tiny shell script to check if host2 is ping-able in order to assure the Database host is not down and then if script determines host2 (mysql) host is down it changes wp-config.php (set to use host2) to a wp-config.php (which I have beforehand configured to use) host1.

Using the script is a temporary solution, since I have to actually find the real hang-up causing troubles, but at least it saves me long downtimes. Here is a download link to the script I called change_blog_db.sh .
I've configured the script to be run on the Apache node (host1) via a crontab calling the script every 10 minutes, here is the crontab:

The script is written in a way so if it determins host2 is reachable a copy of wp-config.php and Joomla's configuration.php tuned to use host2 is copied over the file config originals. In order to use the script one has to configured the head variables script section, e.g.:

You will have to manually prepare;;;

wp-config-localhost.php, wp-config-192.168.0.2.php ,configuration-192.168.0.2.php, wp-config-localhost.php to be existing files configured to with proper host1 and host2 IP addresses.
Hope the script will be useful to others, experiencing database downtimes with WordPress or Joomla installs.
 

Barcodes are dangerous for human freedom! Technology not trustable!

This post will be short as I'm starting to think long posts are mostly non-sense. Have you people all wondered of barcoding?
All world stores around the world have now barcoding. Barcode numbers regulations are being orchestrated by certain bodies, we people have no control over. Barcoding makes us dependent on technology as only technology can be used to read and store barcodes. It is technology that issues the barcodes. We have come to a point, where we humans trust more technology than our physical fellows. Trusting technology more than the close people to us is very dangerous. What if technology is not working as we expect it to?
What if there are hidden ways to control technology that we're not aware of?

Technology concepts are getting more and more crazy and abstract.
Thinks about the virtualization for a while. Virtualuzation is being praised loudly these days and everyone is turnning to it thinking it is cheap and realiable? The facts I've seen and the little of experience I had with it were way less than convicable.
Who came with this stupid idea, oh yes I remember IBM came with this insane idea some about 40 years ago … We had sanity for a while not massively adopting IBM's virtualization bulk ideas and now people got crazy again to use a number of virtualization technologies.
If you think for a while Virtualization is unreality (unexistence) of matter over another unreality. The programs that makes computers "runs" are not existent in practice, they only exist in some electricity form. Its just a sort of electric field if you think on it on a conceptual level …
As we trust all our lives nowdays on technology, how do we know this technological stored information is not altered by other fields, how we can be sure it always acts as we think it does and should? Was it tested for at least 40 years before adoption as any new advancement should be.
Well Of course not! Everything new is just placed in our society without too much thinking. Someone gives the money for production, someone else buys it and installs it and its ready to go. Or at least that's how the consumers thinks and we have become all consumers. This is a big LIE we're constantly being convinced in!
It is not ready to work, it is not tested and we don't know what the consequence of it will be!
Technology and Genetically Modified Food are not so different in this that they both can produce unexpected results in our lives. And they're already producing the bad fruits as you should have surely seen.
You can see more and more people are getting sick, more people go to doctor more people have to live daily with medication to live a miserable dishealthy I wouldn't say live but "poor" existence …
Next time they tell you new technology is good for you and will make your life better, Don't believe them! This is not necessery true.
Though todays technology can do you good, In my view the harm seriously exceeds the good.

How to increase brightness on Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PI22515 notebook with Slackware Linux

Increase LCD screen brightness on Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop with Linux Slackware

A friend of mine has Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop and is full time using his computer with Slackware Linux.

He is quite happy with Slackware Linux 13.37 on the laptop, but unfortunately sometimes his screen brightness lowers. One example when the screen gets darkened is when he switch the computer on without being plugged in the electricity grid. This lowered brightness makes the screen un-user friendly and is quite tiring for the eye …

By default the laptop has the usual function keys and in theory pressing Function (fn) + F8 / F7 – should increase / decrease the brightness with no problems, however on Slackware Linux (and probably on other Linuxes too?), the function keys are not properly recognized and not responding whilst pressed.
I used to have brigtness issues on my Lenovo notebook too and remember how irritating this was.
After a bit of recalling memories on how I solved this brightness issues I remembered the screen brigthness on Linux is tunable through /proc virtual (memory) filesystem.

The laptop (Amilo) Fujitsu Siemens video card is:

I took a quick look in /proc and found few files called brightness:
 

  • /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD01/brightness
  • /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD02/brightness
  • /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD03/brightness
  • /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD04/brightness
  • /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD05/brightness

cat-ting /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD01/brightness, /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD03/brightness, /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD04/brightness all shows not supported and therefore, they cannot be used to modify brightness:

After a bit of testing I finally succeeded in increasing the brightness.
Increasing the brightness on the notebook Intel GM965 video card model is done, through file:

/proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD02/brightness

To see all the brightness levels the Fujitsu LCD display supports:

As you can see the dark screen was caused cause the current: brightness is set to a low value of 25.
To light up the LCD screen and make the screen display fine again, I increased the brightness to the maximum level 100, e.g.:

Just for the fun, I've written also a two lines script which gradually increases LCDs brightness 🙂

fujitsu_siemens_brightness_fun.sh script is fun to observe in changing the LCD screen gradually in one second intervals 🙂

Here is also a tiny program that reduces and increases the notebook laptop brightness written in C. My friend Dido, coded it in just few minutes just for the fun 🙂
To permanently solve the issues with darkened screen on boot time it is a good idea to include echo '100' > /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD02/brigthness in /etc/rc.local:

I've also written another Universal Linux Increase laptop screen brightness Shell script which should be presumable also working for all Laptop models running Linux 🙂

It was quite a peaceful day, I didn’t have a lot of work. Plamenko come home at 4:30. I went to see my grandmo.My grandmo said that there was some mistake and she has to pay for the last month much higher bill than avarageand somebody have to go to report this to the Local Electricity Office, so I take Plamenko’s bike and rided.I like riding bicycle, maybe I have to buy one after that I worked a little ( currently I have to move a dozenof websites sites from one server to another ). In 6:30 I have a walk with Mitko and we drinked coffee on the Chineese Restaurant. After from 08:00 to 10:30 I was home, and then I went out. I and Plamenko went to the Old Dobrich City to Mino’s coffee. I took Plamenko’s bike and used it to ride to a common places where Mitko and the other guys would probably be. I found them in the Central Park and we stayed there for some time. Sasho ( Saketo ), come and stayed with us and explained he’s trying to stop drugs until February. And he doesn’t take drugs since then, not much of the people believed him, but I really hope what he says is truth and God would help him to stop using drugs. Everything seems clear because The Lord is probably taking an eye on me :] So I Bless the Lord for his mercy! Blessed be Lord of Hosts!END—–

What is the real development costs of Debian GNU / Linux – How much costs the development of a Free Software projects

Free Software (FS) is free as in freedom as well as free as in price. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is developed by geek hobbyist which voluntarily put their time and effort in writting, testing and sharing with anyone for free million of lines of programming code. This doesn't mean however the price of free software costs is 0 (zero). Though the "end product" –  Free Software developed is FREE, "real" software costs as with any other product costs huge money.

I've recently read on Jeb's blog an estimation on how much is the cost of one of the major Free Software project efforts – Debian GNU / Linux
According to James E. Brombergerthe whole Debian project was estimated to be at the shocking price of $19 billion – $19 000, 000, 000 !!!

Here is how JEB got the $19 billions, a quote taken from his blog:

"By using David A Wheeler’s sloccount tool and average wage of a developer of US$72,533 (using median estimates from Salary.com and PayScale.com for 2011) I summed the individual results to find a total of 419,776,604 source lines of code for the ‘pristine’ upstream sources, in 31 programming languages — including 429 lines of Cobol and 1933 lines of Modula3!

In my analysis the projected cost of producing Debian Wheezy in February 2012 is US$19,070,177,727 (AU$17.7B, EUR€14.4B, GBP£12.11B), making each package’s upstream source code worth an average of US$1,112,547.56 (AU$837K) to produce. Impressively, this is all free (of cost).

James has done incredible job with this great research and he deserves applause.
However I believe the numbers proposed by his research are slightly different if we speak about realistic cost of Debian GNU / Linux.
The real costs of the working software ready to install on a user PC are way higher, as according to Jeb's research only the software cost based on code line count is considered.

Hence James software estimation calculates only the programming costs and miss many, many factors that constitute the software end cost.
Some of the many, many REAL COST / expenses for developing a huge Free Software project like Debian GNU / Linux to be considered are:
 

a) bandwidth costs for hosting free software (on the server side)b) bandwidth cost for developers or FS users downloading the software

a) Time spend to spread the word of the great added value of Debian and bundled software (Mouth by Mouth Marketing)

b) Time spend to advertise Debian and its free software components on blogs, social networks (identi.ca, facebook, twitter) etc.(Voluntary online Marketing, SEO etc.)

c) Time spend on generating ideas on future program versions and reporting them to Debian FS community

d) Time on evaluation and feedback on software

e) Time spend on managing free software repository (download) servers voluntarily (by system administrators)

f) Time spend by users on Bug Tracking & Bug Reporting

g) Time spend on research and self-actualization by software developer)

h) Time spend on software Quality Assurance

This are most of the multiple factors which should probably influence the cost of any non-free (proprietary software) project. No matter this costs apply for non-free software, it perfectly applies for free software as well.With all said if if we assume the non-programming costs are equal to the programming costs of $ 19 000 000 000 (suggested by Jeb). This means the real cost of Debian will presumably be at least $32 000 000 000. Putting $ 19 billion for all this long list of "additional" costs (besides pure source) factors is probably still very under-scored number.
 

  • the developers use of their own computers (hardware depreciation)
  • electricity bill of the volunteer (developer) working on the program or project
  • electricity bills for servers where free software is stored and available for download
  • volunteer developer IT skills and tech knowledge (KNOW HOW)
  • Internet, network, dial up bandwidth cost
  • personal time put in FS development (programming, design, creativity etc.)! here the sub costs are long:
  • Costs for Project Management Leaders / Project Coordination
  • The complexity of each of the projects constituting Debian

Very interesting figure from Jeb's research is the Programming Languages break down by source code figure.
Jamesresearch reveals on the 4 major programming languages used in the 17000+ software projects (part of Debian GNU / Linux):

 

  • ANSI C with 168,536,758 – (40% of all projects source code)
  • C++ at 83,187,329 – (20% of all projects source)
  • Java 34,698,990 – (lines of code 8% of sources)
  • Lisp – (7% of all projects source code)

  His research also provides a general idea on how much the source code of some of the major FOSS projects costs. Here is a copy of his figures

As you can imagine all the source evaluation results, are highly biased and are open for discussion, since evaluating a free software project/s is a hard not to say impossible task. The "open" model of development makes a project very hard to track, open source model implies too many unexpected variables missing from the equation for clear calculation on costs. What is sure however if turned in money it is very expensive to produce.  At present moment Debian Project is sponsored only through donations. The usual yearly budget 5 years ago for Debian  was only $80 000 dollars a year!! You can check Debian Project annual reports throughout the years here , for year 2012 Debian Project budget is as low as $ 222, 677 (US Dollars)! The output price of the software the project provides is enormous high if compared to the low project expenses!

For us the free software users, price is not a concern, Debian is absolutely free both  as in freedom and free as in beer 😉
