Nokia 9300i Communicator with final firmware Symbian version 6.27 still contains an old telephone hanging bug

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Earlier I’ve written an article tagged How to reset to factory defaults (hard reset) hanged Nokia 9300i device / How to format your Nokia 9300i

Therein I explained how I ended up with an unbootable telephone after improperly shutting down my Nokia directly removing the battery instead of pressing the Nokia front turn off button first and then remove the battery.

Two months ago in order to get rid of the annoying nokia hanging on boot up bug I decided to flush my firwmare.
The firmware was a flushed by a friend of me who is a Mobile software specialist he used a special so called double cable and a special software programmer device which is required to flush up a certain range of mobile phones models.

Since the firmware update my Nokia was equipped with the latest firmware version provided by Nokia corp before Nokia dropped the support for the phone.
The latest Nokia firmware version available which was installed on my phone was 6.27.(0)

For two months the Nokia worked just fine, however just recently once again after a couple of different SIM card changes with the phone, the phone hanged the same time as described in my earlier written article How to reset to factory defaults (hard reset) hanged Nokia 9300i device / How to format your Nokia 9300i

This pissed me off and I once again had to follow the necessary described steps about formatting the Nokia 9300i Communicator mobile device as it’s explained in the up-mentioned article.

The format went fine nevertheless the newer phone firmware version.
The format completed quite quickly once again it took in between 30 seconds and a minute to complete.

The good news after the format of my hanged Nokia phone was that it kept the newer firmware version, even after reverting to facture defaults with the firmware format.
Now thanksfully still my Symbian OS version is still 6.27(0)

It’s rather strange that even the newest avaialable firmware patch for the Nokia 9300i doesn’t fix such a vital boot up mobile hang error.

Hope this info is helpful to somebody out there.

Skype on Nokia 9300i

I decided to write this short article because I found really hard, not to say impossible to find a Skype for Nokia 9300i on the Internet.

It appears there is no official release of a Skype for the Nokia Communicator 9300 / 9300i mobile.
However there are releases of Skype for older Nokia Communicator mobile phones which luckily are compatible with the Nokia 9300i symbian s80 OS platform.

After some experiments of testing the older Skype releases on my Nokia 9300i mobile I’ve found out that actually the version of Skype dedicated for Nokia 7370 works perfectly fine on the Nokia Communicator 9300i phone.

The installation of Skype on the Nokia 9300i prooved to be a piece of cake:

All I had to do was:

1. download the release of the Skype for the Nokia 7370

2. Transfer the Nokia 7370 jar java file to my mobile

3. Use the Nokia 9300i File Manager application to install the

For some convenience of people who owns the Nokia 9300i mobile and want to have the Skype for their mobile I’ve made a mirror of the nokia7370 under the name nokia_communicator_skype_9300.jar.
The mirrored file nokia_communicator_skype_9300.jar can be downloaded from here

Well that’s all, all left is to enjoy Skype on your Nokia 9300i mobile 🙂

Barcoder for Nokia 9300i (finding a product origin through the barcode)

Barcoder nokia mobile

Have you ever wondered on how you could check the product bought from the store origin by it’s barcode?
Every product produced nowadays has a barcode sticker somewhere on it’s cover.
In the economically developed countries, almost 100% of the products has a barcode. This barcode is a identifier on where does a certain product origins from.
Barcodes does facilitate the process of tracking a product as well as finding some more information about a certain product.
It also helps in speeding up the product identification, it also speeds up the time necessary to mark the product in stores.
I guess almost everybody has been into a store where they use a barcode reader device to mark your bought products.

Barcodes has subliminally become a very essential part of humanity daily life.
Thus I found handy to have a program on your smartphone mobile to read barcodes.
I haven’t done a thorough research on the barcode number reader programs online, however I’ve came across a Russian program called BarCoder which is able to read barcode numbers sequence to be found below the barcode strip lines.

The BarCoder program is very handy especially in stores where you buy food, technical equipment, ironware, electronics … you name it.

May products nowadays doesn’t include a country or region stated where the product has been produced.
However the products still contain the barcode, by entering the barcode number sequence into Barcoder , the program reports where the product was produced.

You can download the barcoder freeware here

Good old fashioned hexedit for your Nokia communicator mobile

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Some of you might remember the glorious day of the hexeditors. As a PC geek I used to make quite of an use back in the days.
Especially with the MS-DOS old days having a hexeditor was completely essential piece of software.
Hexeditors were used for general debugging of software changing certain message texts of application and games which were hard coreded as a text within the executable binaries.

In that manner of thoughts I just recently came across a hexeditor software for my Nokia 9300i Communicator phone

I find it really handy to have a hexeditor able to allow me to edit my nokia phone binary files and change chunks of text encoded information in the binary.
Back in the old days the hexeditors were also seriously used for crackin I haven’t tested if the hexeditor on mobile phones is able to be used for the same simple task, however I think it supposed to be capable of being used for such a purpose as well.

Apart from that the hexedit mobile application for the Symbian S80 is a freeware and that makes it even more attractive piece of soft to install on your mobile.
Here is a screenshot on how hexedit looks like when editing a binary file.

Nokia Communicator 9300i, mobile hexedit
Hope this wonderful piece of soft is helpful to someone else out there.

DROS (Use DOS like command shell) on Nokia mobile phones

DROS nokia mobile ftp screenshot
Ever wanted to have the good old fashioned DOS command like prompt on your Nokia 9300i mobile?
Hopefully you do, just like I wanted. The DROS mobile phone application written in MIDP, the install application is actually a jar.
If you’re a console (shell) freak like me you will certainly value this handy app.
What makes things even better is that DROS is able to run simple BATCH files (e.g. has an embedded BASIC interpreter)

Some of the other many nice features that DROS has embedded in it are:

1. DROS contains a media player that can be used to play mp3 files
2. DROS have embedded command line FTP client
3. DROS includes a very basic file text editor
Using the DROS text editor you can write basic batch scripts and execute them to automate stuff on your mobile.
DROS comes with a very good written documentation (MANUAL)
It somehow brings memories about the good old days of the 80s command based computing, this kind of “presence” fits very well with the Nokia 9300i Communicator mobile 🙂
Some of the other Mobile phones which are supported by DROS are as follows:

Nokia 6630, Nokia 6670, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 9300, Nokia 9500, Nokia N70, Nokia N80, Nokia N90, Nokia N91, Nokia Series 60, Sony Ericsson P990

If this app catched your interest then follow the DROS download link
Installation of the program is very easy and comes to clicking over on the java executable (jar file) using the Nokia’s File Manager.

How to use a Nokia 9300i as a Torch at Night time or at dark places with DiscoLight

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

I do own a Nokia Communicator 9300i for some time I’ve been looking for a while for an application for my mobile phone enabling me to transform the normal Nokia 9300i phone capabilities into a torch (flash light)

Many telephones come with an embedded software or hardware light led, that gives the option for the phone user to use his / her phone as a torch in the dark.
However with Nokia 9300i by default there is no such led to be able to emit bright light neither through a feature integrated with the mobile’s hardware nor through it’s embedded pre-installed software.

The phones torch I see as a very essential and handy feature for every mobile phone, so I have to say that it was rather strange why the flash light wasn’t decided to be made an integral part of the Nokia 9300i Communicator

It took me a while until I finally found an application able to show a brigh light on my phone Nokia 9300i internal screen and therefore allow the mobile to be used as a torch in the dark.

Anyhow the effort of spending an hour of Googling around was awarding 🙂
The software that allowed my Nokia 9300i to have the Torch capabilities is called DiscoLight / (Disco Light)

Here is a download link to discolight I’ve found online
I also made a mirror of the discolight app that can be downloaded here
Discolight is actually not actually planned to operate as a Torch for the Nokia 9300i, it is just a program able to either fill your mobile phone screen with a colors you might choose from (e.g. white light, flash sequence, auto color, standard flash) or do a sequence of colors (like in the discoteques I guess that’s where the name of the application comes from).

To use the DiscoLight program as a torch, right after the program is launched press the 5 key on your Nokia communicator keyboard.

Another very simple program that is able to transform your Nokia Business class phone to a Torch is FlashLight

Both DiscoLight and FlashLight are written in Java and works perfectly fine with the 9300i mobile.

The only disadvantage about using my Nokia 9300i as a torch is my Nokia communicator inside panel has to be opened, e.g. I had to walk with the phone cover opened to use the torch.
Anyways still I find this feature very handy for me, hopefully it will be of an use to somebody else who is looking for the same functionality on his mobile.

ToDo Manager (Business Organizer) for the Nokia 9300i phone

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

I’m heavily using my Nokia 9300i to write down various stuff relating to my daily schedules,
I used it’s simple small notes embedded application to hold a small notes on things to come,
tasks I have to accomplish and other various stuff like that.

Though this things worked so far it’s completely inflexible since you get completely lost when you have to look up for the exact note to recall what you were supposed to do.

In that manner of thoughts I wanted to have a To-do manager / Event management application (program for my Nokia 9300i), to better keep track of the things I’m supposed to complete.

After I’ve spend about and hour online, looking for applications.
I basicly came up with two applications that are actually prepared to serve as todo managers

I’ll start with the first one since it’s freeware and it does the job, though it’s not too user friendly oriented.

It’s called with the loud name TodoManager

TodoManager has the basic features that you might probably look after. It could save your tasks, it somehow organizes them, you can assign a task priority as well as put an alarm about it.

However the user friendliness of the TodoManager for Nokia 9300i is I would say completely terrible.

The program alarm feature is also not working on Nokia 9300i or at least for some reason I couldn’t make it work.

Once I’ve left the program opened even the application crashed with some kind of K-EXEC Error

The second application I came across was RMR Task

As you can read on their website RMR Task is stated to be Extended ToDo Manager for all symbian platforms including the Nokia Communicator 9300i devices.

RMR Task is far superior to the TodoManager which by the is a java application, however it’s a commercial software and it’s trial version is very limited.
So in order to take use of all it’s features you’ll have to purchase it.

How to copy contacts from SIM Card to Phone memory on Nokia 9300i

Monday, September 6th, 2010

I’ve travelled to a country abroad and I bought a SIM card to use with my Nokia 9300i.
My old contacts list was actually stored on a SIM card I was using till now in my home country (Bulgaria), therefore I needed a way to copy my contacts from the former SIM card to the new SIM card I bought from abroad.

I looked through the front panel of my Nokia Communicator 9300i mobile phone but after a close examination I realized there was no menu giving me the opportunity to copy my contacts list to either the phone memory or the new SIM card.

I was quite sure that my mobile should be able to copy phone Contacts considering the fact it’s a smart phone and it has embedded so many sophisticated functions.

I decided to give a try to find a way to copy the contacts list using the inner side of my phone (which reveals right after opening the phone, e.g. the keyboard side).

Thanksfully it appeared that copying my contacts list to both the telephone memory as well as the newer SIM card was a piece of cake.

Here is the exact step I had to took in order to be able to copy my people contacts phones to another SIM card

1. Open up your smart phone inner side
2. On Nokia’s 9300i keyboard press Contacts
3. Choose SIM card from the menu
4. Furthermore select Copy all
5. A screen will appear reading Copy contacts to there you have to choose Contacts

That’s all your contacts should now be copied to your mobile phone. Cheers 🙂

Playing Sega Mega Drive Games on Nokia 9300 / 9300i, Step by step howto install and play best sega mega drive games on Nokia 9300i on (picodrive)

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Ever thought about playing your favourite good old arcade games on Nokia 9300i?
I did ! It took me a while until I can play my favourite games from my youth,
however I was lucky to make it work.
1. In order to play the Sega games I have to use a Picodrive (a sega mega drive emulatorwho was originally written for Risc OS) and then was ported for our shiny mobile phones. The port that worked on my Nokia 9300i was picodrives80s90_0_5_latest_04-06-2006.sis
I have to admit it was a real pain in the ass to find the working version of Picodrive for the
Nokia 9300i mobile. So I hope you’ll be more happy than me simply following the picodrive
download location provided in the download link above.

2. After having the properly installed version of picodrive on your Nokia.
create a folder (preferably) on your memory card. Assure yourself the new created folder
is called pdgames.
3. Download some Sega Genesis roms from romnation.net orany other large Sega Genesis rom archive on the Internet.
4. Top 50 WORKING (recommended to playgames) for the picodrive emulator are as follows:
(N.B.! Originally the list of games was taken from allaboutsymbian’s website forums 1. Altered Beast2. California Games3. Cannon Fodder4. Columns5. Coolspot6. Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine7. Dragon's Fury8. Family Fortunes9. Fatal Fury10. FIFA 9711. Golf12. Greatest Heavyweights Boxing13. Green Dog14. Hard Drivin'15. Jungle Strike16. Lemmings17. Marble Madness18. Michael Jackson's Moonwalker19. Micky Mouse in Enchanted Castle20. Mortal Kombat21. Mutant League Football22. NBA Jam23. Outrun24. Paper Boy 225. Pit Fighter26. Revenge of Shinobi27. Road Rash28. Road Rash 229. Road Rash 330. Rocket Knight Adventures31. Simpsons, The - Krusty's Super Funhouse32. Sonic & Knuckles33. Sonic 134. Sonic 235. Sonic 336. Sonic 3d Blast37. Sonic Crackers38. Sonic Spinball39. Splatter House 240. Streets of Rage 141. Streets of Rage 242. Streets of Rage 343. Strider44. Super Monaco Grand Prix45. Taz Mania46. Tiny Toon Adventures47. Toejam and Earl48. Two Crude Dudes49. Virtua Fighter 2 vs Tekken 250. WWF Wrestlemania
Even though the list conatins plenty of wonderful sega games. Not all the games forementioned
were suitable for my personal liking.
Thus I’ve selected a custom list of games which I like more:
The roms I’ve installed on my Nokia 9300i, I’ve bundled in a small archive that can be downloaded
here, my picodrive_nokia9300i_favourite_roms_collection .
Well I was increadibly happy to be able to play this oldschool games on my phone! Hope you’ll experience the same wonderful joy!
Cheers 🙂

Manage tasks and processes on your cellphone with TaskSpy

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

TaskSpy on Nokia 9300i, Nokia 9300 TaskSpy
I was looking for a decent freeware program that will be able to manage my processes (a task manager) and be able to show statistics about memory and cpu usage for my Nokia 9300i.
Until recently I used a cracked version of BestTaskman which did quite a good job until recently when the program started crashing on my cellphone.
I remember last time how much time I spend to find a decent crack for the BestTaskMan taskmanager and this time I decided to check if there is something similar to BestTasman that could handle my processes and doesn’t need to be cracked.
I was happily suprised to find TaskSpy which is a superb program and was exactly what I was looking for. It even has some extra capabilities compared to BestTaskman though it is a bit less unconvinient while switching tasks, since every time the user is required to switch to the TaskSpy and from hence choose if he desires to switch to another application, kill an application monitor the mobile etc.

Here I will include a short description on what to expect if you install and start using TaskSpy:

TaskSpy is a completely free task manager for Symbian OS devices.
It allows you to get more control and information over running tasks on your mobile phone.
You can quickly switch tasks, kill processes and threads or free unused memory, as well as display detailed information about system resources.
Other features, such as tracking cpu load and free memory, though aimed to developers, may result of interest to advanced users.Another really handy feature is that TaskSpy is able to reboot your mobile.

Currently TaskSpy supports the following mobile architectures:

* Symbian 6 Series 60
* Symbian 6 Series 60 1.0
* Symbian 6 Series 60 1.2
* Symbian 7 Series 60 2.0
* Symbian 7 Series 60 2.1
* Symbian 8 Series 60 2.6
* Symbian 8 Series 60 2.8

If you’re interested into TaskSpy and you’d like to download and install it on your mobile, please follow this taskspy download link
I personally had a great experience with the program on my Nokia 9300i, hopefully you will enjoy it too.
